Not Another Award-Winning Movie?

A Trailer for Every Academy Award Winning Movie Ever -- powered by Cracked.com

Describe your initial reaction to the trailer.  Did you like it? Dislike it? Agree? Disagree? Was it funny? A waste of your time? Would you repost it on facebook because it was so incredibly awesome?

Now analyze your response to the parody.  If you like it, why? If you felt it was a complete waste of your time, why? If you found it funny, what made it so?

Finally, what elements of the trailer resonate truths that are congruent with your own beliefs about the film industry? The “Award-Winning Movie Trailer” operates under the assumption that the “best” films all follow the same predictable storytelling patterns, that creating an award-winning movie is really more about following a formula. (Keep this in mind later when we watch Adaptation.) It satirizes academy award-winning movies in a similar way as movies like Scary Movie, Not another Teen Movie, and Dance Flick satirize their more serious counterparts by mocking the formula. What formulas do you see at work in the types of films you choose to watch? Do they follow the pattern outlined in this video? Do you prefer films that stick to tried and true patterns or those that stretch the boundaries of audience expectation?

  1. Not being one to follow along with trending movie styles or the Academy Awards, I can't comment on the whether or not I agree that the themes portrayed by the trailer are those most common in award winning movies. I can agree that there is a clear trend in movies that can easily be followed down the line of these themes, and because of this I can be fairly confident in saying that I believe these movies must be doing something right. The idea that the movie industry has become stale and formulized is one that in all likelihood is probably true, but on the other hand, I can’t really see this being as a completely bad thing. As with anything, refinement and repetition tend to create a more perfect product in the end. So long as movies have enough significant differences within, following a pattern of what has worked before seems like a completely logical approach. Maybe it’s simply because I don’t watch enough movies to see the repetition on a large enough scale to notice the implied lack of creativity the parody portrays, but I believe I have seen enough good and bad movies to know that the generalized themes of everything starting great, then getting worse, then getting better or a journey of self-fulfillment is not enough to make a movie. Good movies require a depth of character that would be too obvious to copy verbatim. I believe the way to a good movie is to follow a common thread of the genre and then create new characters to progress through it. As for the parody itself, I found the way in which the actors simply stated the idea of their lines and characters rather than actual dialog quite entertaining. The trailer was incredibly well done, and I’m sure did a wonderful job of capturing general themes seen throughout popular movies.

  2. I would have to agree with the movie trailer, espicially at this day and age. It seems to be getting harder and harder to find original movies that don't follow a formula or a certain structure. I enjoyed this trailer because at one point in time, everyone has seen this movie. There's always a turning point, a love story, a footloose moment, and so on. This trailer shows that pretty much anything could win an emmy award if they follow this structure. All they have to do is fill in the blanks. I prefer movies that make you think and take you by surprsie. I've watched the same movie at least fifteen times with different actors and names but the same formula. It is the movies with twists and shocking moments that people will remember. Sadly, movies like that are becoming scarce. However, they do still exist. I try to challenge myself to try new things, including movies. The same old drama story gets to be boring after so many times. That is the exact reason why this trailor really grabbed my attention. It was originally unoriginal. I do see formulas in the films I chose to watch. I prefer Horror movies. Many of them can be predictible, but I still love them. Most of the time one girl will survive a massacre and eliminate whatever evil she is facing. Women are the main characters in a majority of the movies I've seen. Also, there is always a bad influence in those movies. There is always the friend who is doing drugs or having sex, who is surely going to be greeted by death. I'm sure different genres have different formulas to follow if they wish to receive an emmy award.

  3. The Award Winning Movie has many movie themes and content all mixed together and my initial reaction was this so stupid but so true. One of the points of this movie that I agree with is the man and woman fighting in the car. This is true in real life and on film. The couple is sitting in the car and the woman is yelling at the man. Then silence for a moment and then she utters a soft statement. One thing I disagree with is the film portrayed a actor that was a war veteran and the next minute a lawyer, and then parenting a mentally handicap person. Some highlights about the film that caught my attention was how true some of the scenes were in real life and, also in films everywhere. I did not think it was so hilarious that I would post it in Facebook or any other sites for that matter.

  4. From the beginning of the clip we viewed in class, I was instantly hooked on the brilliant approach this crew took to shed light on the predictability of today’s great films. Personally, I have always favored satirical humor and parodies, hence why Saturday Night Live is one of my absolute favorite shows. In fact, the clip displayed a lot of similarities to the late night show: inflated drama scenes, “corny” dialogue, and predictability. The entire production was clever; however I must say I loved the car scene in which the couple had encountered hardship. The woman is obviously in distress and explicitly states “Passionate plea! ...whispered repetition.” That portion was so spot-on to today’s romance movies. I mean, sitting here thinking about the most recent ones I’ve watched, conflict is the major factor that accompanies all of these couples. The fact that this clip highlighted that ever-so-familiar concept in today’s movies is brilliant. So overall, the clip was completely enjoyable for me. So enjoyable, yeah I just might re-post it on Facebook.
The most astonishing thing about the clip was that in the mere three minutes that it occupies, it somehow highlights the cycle that many of today’s movies follow: normalcy, struggle, conflict, resolution, and triumph—a formula, if you will. This got me thinking, and my verdict is that I’m sad to say that I have fallen under the spell of predictability. I like to sit down, watch characters go through this cycle, and see a happy ending at the conclusion of the movie. I recently watched “One Day,” and the movie has an extremely drastic twist about three-fourths through it. I felt miserable after watching it because I like to see the characters that I just spent two hours of my life with, to triumph and come out on top. I hate to admit it; maybe this makes me predictable, when I say I like predictability.

  5. The “Award-Winning Movie Trailer”

The initial reaction to the trailer that I had was I liked it and disliked it to a degree. I liked it because it was funny and entertaining. I did not like it because it tried to be too dramatic, and I am not a big fan of dramatic movies. I agreed with the trailer; it was portraying what most movies follow and what it takes to make them a good movie. The “Award-Winning Movie Trailer” was not a waste of my time. I enjoyed watching it. I would repost it on Facebook because I believe that most of my friends would enjoy it very much.

I liked watching The “Award-Winning Movie Trailer” because it makes a good point about why most people like certain movies and what it takes to make a good movie. I found it funny and liked how they incorporated a bunch of different award winning movies all into one.

The elements of the trailer that resonate truths that are congruent to my own beliefs about the film industry are that most good movies follow the same story pattern. Every film producer wants to produce a film that everyone will love, so I believe that the film producers follow a similar pattern. I like to watch horror and action/adventure, and most horror movies follow the same pattern of trying to bring out the fear in the audience. Action/Adventure movies do the same thing; they try to catch the audience’s attention and draw them into the story. The films that I usually watch kind of follow the pattern outlined in The “Award-Winning Movie Trailer, but the pattern differs a little bit. I prefer films that stretch the boundaries of the audience’s expectation because I believe that those types of movies are the good ones.

  6. The award winning movie trailer was a spoof of several famous movies all generically shown in this trailer. I thought this was a very funny way of portraying what the movie industry does with basically every film. All movies basically use some of the same themes. This parody just showed that the film industry is like a cookie cutout and they follow the same guidelines. This trailer tried to be so many different types of movies all at once. If this was a real movie this would be impossible to follow if we were to believe the main character was capable of accomplishing everything that this trailer showed. The trailer showed the main character as being able to take care of a mentally challenge and than the next minute showed him as a lawyer and then a teacher. I thought it was funny when it said the lines that everyone would quote. It seems as though all movies end up having a quote line that everyone repeats. I really liked this movie trailer because I believe the film industry makes alot of the same themes and movie styles just to sell their product. I don't believe they are truly here to entertain us anymore. I think it is a huge money making industry and they use ideas and tactics to sell their product aka "The movie." I believe the action films all start out the same have a climax point and then they have this elaborate problem solved and having a happy ending is generally the way they end. Romantic movies remind me of romance novels. They start out kinda slow and then it seems as though there is always this huge problem and it causes them to argue or fight and then they generally always have a happy ending and wind up getting married. I seem to always watch movies that have the same happy ending at the end. I would like to try some movies that do not follow the same pattern.

  7. I think that if the writers would come up with a actual script this would be a great movie. But in my opinion the scipt is more like a silent film with the characters narrating the movie in a relation to actions in the movie. To me its like the charecter didnt or couldnt think of taking time to come up with own names of chareters or actual dialoge. I know its supose to be a funny "ha ha" type of movie but i didnt see any situation or hear any comment that was funny.

To me for me insted of just breaking the movie down into their components like for example the movie title is "Movie Title" insted of calling it that because it dose go along with the "Epic Movie" "Date Movie" and "Not Another Teen Movie" they could have named it something like "A Drama Movie" or "Movie Drama" or even just plain old "A Drama". I think it dose follow patterns of the movies i mentioned , i think the dialoge stays away from the paraody genre. They need to add a new scipt so its actually has jokes in the plot.

  8. “Let’s make a toast!”
What a great way to start of a Movie Trailer. As soon as I saw that I knew what I was watching in the beginning of class today was going to be good. At first I did not know if I was actually watching a movie or if I was watching the setup of a perfect movie being done in front of me. After watching this movie trailer I realized how easy it is to make a movie. As long as you follow what this says you will definitely have a perfect movie. I also really enjoyed watching it. I believe that this movie trailer does a good job at doing what it was made to do. The trailer talks about making a perfect movie. It covers the main things that I believe every movie should have. Following this formula to make a “perfect” movie has been done plenty of times. One example of this could be War of the Worlds. In this everything that this movie trailer is talking about is done. And they do a good job at it. When people try to make a movie and stray away from this formula the results speak for themselves. A good example of this would be Chuck Dog. This movie made it nowhere. The reason for this is because they didn’t follow the movie trailer. So in all I enjoyed this movie trailer and I got something out of it. I hope you did also.

  9. I did like the trailer and disliked the trailer at the same time.I had a hard time feeling agreement or disagreement as I watched it.I found parts of it funny.I would not repost the trailer on facebook because I do not have a facebook account and lack the knowledge to post something on facebook.I liked the trailer because I generally like previews of movies.I disliked the trailer because it moved so quickly from one scene to another that I could not follow it auditorially.Once I had seen the trailer a second time I felt it was funny because it exposed qualities that filmmakers use to insure that a movie is successful. As a man,the action/adventure films that I like are full of action and yet lack a great deal of plot which is a formula that works for men.I have always enjoyed science-fiction and fanatasy films because of the escape from reality that they afford but it must be plausible. The films that I prefer to watch did not follow that pattern although there were examples inthe snippets of the trailer.I prefer films that have tried and true patterns because as I get older I dislike Change more and more.
