Describe your initial reaction to the trailer. Did you like it? Dislike it? Agree? Disagree? Was it funny? A waste of your time? Would you repost it on facebook because it was so incredibly awesome?
Now analyze your response to the parody. If you like it, why? If you felt it was a complete waste of your time, why? If you found it funny, what made it so?
Finally, what elements of the trailer resonate truths that are congruent with your own beliefs about the film industry? The “Award-Winning Movie Trailer” operates under the assumption that the “best” films all follow the same predictable storytelling patterns, that creating an award-winning movie is really more about following a formula. (Keep this in mind later when we watch Adaptation.) It satirizes academy award-winning movies in a similar way as movies like Scary Movie, Not another Teen Movie, and Dance Flick satirize their more serious counterparts by mocking the formula. What formulas do you see at work in the types of films you choose to watch? Do they follow the pattern outlined in this video? Do you prefer films that stick to tried and true patterns or those that stretch the boundaries of audience expectation?
At first, I wasn't sure what the trailer was suppose to be about. I didn't find it as something I would need to watch more of or spend more time with. I felt as though this was kind of dumb. It didn't really have much of a point in my eyes. I find myself more commonly following films that are in the common pattern. This trailer was stretching the boundaries a little too much for my liking. I find the other movies following this pattern to be too "odd" and "dumb" for my liking. Especially the main character in the video was someone who bug me regularly through the movie. This would not be something I would spend more time watching.
ReplyDeleteWhy did the protagonist "bug" you? Did he annoy anyone else?
DeleteThis movie trailer seemed to have been touching, but also entertaining. It honestly looks like a good movie to watch! I love the fact that people still out there are willing to help those who are mentally challenged. In my personal opinion, nothing is more touching than that. The fact that they quote literary terms throughout the trailer also makes the movie look like a good one to watch. Based on just reviewing the trailer, I would recommend the movie to somebody. It may also be a good movie to watch in a class room setting, so you can learn about how to touch others’ lives. Any movie that involves a touching story would be a good movie for any generation to watch and to enjoy! The trailer was not very long; however, it does show the better parts of a movie. But, in my opinion any trailer shows the better parts of a movie that is featured. The fact that it also has an Award Winning Actor and Actress definitely make the movie look more interesting. I like how during the trailer it does state that at the end, it lets you know that there are popular Actors’/Actress’ in the movie. It does look very comical for any age or genre of person. Some movies are only targeted at a certain generation; however, this does look like a wide variety of age groups. Any movie that has a variety of age groups does help promote a movie much better. The only thing bad about this trailer was that it did not show when the show would come out or even on TV. I would want to know when a movie was going to come out. Therefore, that is my only negative comment in regards to “Movie Title”. Other than that, it looks like a decent movie filled with many laughs!
ReplyDeleteMy initial reaction to the trailer was a good one. I found it to be very funny and extremely entertaining. I would definitely “share” this trailer on Facebook with my friends, because my friends always enjoy a good laugh!
ReplyDeleteI found this trailer to be extremely entertaining because it wasn’t your typical “funny trailer.” Don’t get me wrong, it was VERY funny, but in settle way. I’m a very sarcastic person, and this trailer seemed nothing more than sarcastically funny. It was light and fun, and would make anyone forget their problems for a few minutes!
I feel that this trailer was a very correct perception of the film industry. There are several points made in that trailer that many movies follow. There always seems to be an “award winning actor,” and an “award winning actress,” even several that have an “actor that currently died this year,” in the movie. Most of the time these actors and actresses I’ve never even heard of! Most movies have a “jerk” or a “conceited” person in it that usually always changes because of some sort of love interest, just as in this movie.
I’m very glad that this trailer was brought to my attention. It was a breath of fresh air and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Pay attention to the way Erica organized her post. You don't have to do this, but the fact that she responded to each paragraph of the original post in a separate paragraph of her own and in the same order helps readers understand exactly what she is responding to when. I imagine that it also helped her keep track of what she had and had not yet responded to.
DeleteI liked this trailer. It was hilarious and directly targeted the tactics that advertisers use. I would share this with as many people as possible just due to the pure hilarity along with the realization of marketing strategies. Just about every movie commercial or trailer follows this. What made this so funny for me was the truth of the process. Thinking back to any commercial for a movie makes me see the connections between it and the parody seen here. It would be nice to see people try and branch out from this concept, but to truly get all the information needed to see if one is actually interested in the film it's the best course of action. This parody seems to work best with a romantic comedy or a drama movie; then again the lines between those have become more blurred over the years. People aren't always too bright, and a step by step process like this will keep those people up to par with others. So instead of looking for real entertainment, branching away from this form of trailer and making it in a way that only a few people can connect with on a whole new level isn't as good for business. Personally I would see a new type of advertisement as a challenge and try my best to figure it out making me more interested in the movie, but putting that much hope in a chance that people will take that much interest is slim for people in the movie making business. Horror movies seem to do the best at straying from this type of formula. They show a few scary scenes and include a part of the plot, but the adrenaline rush from the scary scene gets people interested and they don't necessarily need all the information to want to see it. That may also be why some people are left feeling let down after seeing a horror movie. They didn't know enough about it and it wasn't as adrenalin pumping as first thought.
ReplyDeleteSome people would say that horror is one of the most formulaic film genres. Why do you disagree? Do you think it is in more recent years that horror films have begun to break the mold? What would be some specific examples of horror films that deviate from the formula? How do they break the mold, and to what effect? Has it damaged business as you suggest could happen with other genres?
DeleteWatching the same kind of movies becomes tiresome. It is nice to watch a different style of film, such as ones the make lite of another. I found this to be entaining.I don't think I found it funny enough to post on facebook, however i wound send the imformation to some of my friends the the same cheesy humor as myself. While watching this my first reaction to the trailer was a little thrown off, untill I figured out where they were going with it. I now find it humorous. I also enjoy how it was set, it gave a vague idea of who the charactors were, the point in which they were trying to get apoint and delivered with a touch of humor.
ReplyDeleteWhat point do you think the filmmakers of this trailer were trying to get across to their audience?
DeleteI personally did not like this trailer at all, mostly because it jumped from this scene to this scene and made no sense at all. If this movie was out in the movie theater today, there is absolutely no way I would ever go and see it.
ReplyDeleteI did actually agree to the trailer that it is like Every Oscar Winning Movie Ever. I believe I agree to this trailer because it relates to life and shows people that you never know what is going to happen in life. People need to just live for the day.
This was funny in certain places. I believe it was more funny because he was just having fun with it. It sort of was like one of my friends or me making a video or like a reality series on TV. The funniest part by far has got to be when the guy was in the bathtub and he tried drinking wine and spilt it all over his face.
This was but wasn’t a waste of my time. It was because it has absolutely nothing to do with it and I would never actually go and watch this anywhere. But then again it wasn’t because it shows people to live for the day. Well at least that is what I got out of this.
I probably would not repost this on my Facebook. But then again I don’t get on Facebook that much anymore, nor do I post on it. I personally prefer Intagram or Twitter lately.
There is a reason that movies become award winning movies. Yes, they may follow the same story line. But then again if they do who cares they end up being great movies that everyone usually loves. So in the end it might just be another award winning film, but in the end if it is the same story line or not we all love it.
Why didn't it make sense?
DeleteThe “Award-Winning Movie Trailer”, even though not Facebook sharing worthy, was a very funny video with a unique way of showing how most award-winning movies are laid out. I agree with the video on how these movies all have somewhat of the same story line as the other. I liked the parody due to its way of the movie trailer playing out normally, but instead of the characters speaking regularly they were telling what was going on in the part of the film. I would prefer to watch a film that stretches outside of the boundaries of a regular movie. I prefer this since it gets boring to watch the same thing happen over and over again with no change. Every once in a while it is good to see the “bad guys” win one or having the man or woman not end up with the love of their lives instead of not having to worry about what will happen next since you know nothing will happen to the “good guys”. Sarcastic videos like this should send more of a message that it is time for film makers to make a change in the way they lay out their films.
ReplyDeleteI will admit that most movies I watch are formulaic Hollywood movies, probably because most movies are formulaic Hollywood movies. However, I love art films, independent films, and foreign films as well. It's nice to experience something outside the norm sometimes.
DeleteThis film trailer was a representation of a typical big budget film. It was somewhat tongue-in-cheek and very humorously done. It showed how large production studios sell their films to the public. The character types were portrayed the way we think of the actors in a film, that is, we tend to understand why the actors in the film were cast, i.e.: award winning actor/actress, aged actress making a career comeback, etc. rather than the actor cast who is the best suited for his/her part. This trailer made an obvious and sardonic attempt to give the viewer a literal translation of the characters, plot, plot twist, and emotional conclusion complete with music cues. The trailer was presented in a transparent way--which was actually refreshing. However, as with actual films, it gave away the entire movie in the preview (I hate that!) It was an enjoyable way to understand how production studios sell their wares to the movie going public. For me, just having an idea of what the movie is about its enough--I don't need to know what the most intriguing part of the film is before I decide to see it. I prefer the mini-skirt rule when it comes to film trailers: Long enough to cover the important parts, but short enough to retain interest.
ReplyDeleteHow do the rest of your feel about movie trailers?
DeleteI usually hate most parodies because they are overdone and often stretch the truth a little too far just to get a laugh. While I could probably argue a lot of points on why this video was incorrect, I found a lot of the points to be true and I really did enjoy this “trailer”. Most trailers today are predictable and sometimes vague. I found myself connecting this trailer to others I have seen of popular and award winning movies. For example, “The Great Gatsby” trailer for the most recent film (which I have watched way too many times) starts out just the same way. The trailer starts out with Gatsby telling Nick about his extravagant lifestyle and abundance of wealth which is exactly what the protagonist in the trailer does. Then when Daisy is introduced in the trailer it shows Gatsby’s façade slowly falling away and his life turning upside down. In the mock trailer, as soon as the protagonist has the complication thrown into his life, the scenes start looking dark and desperate and the music turns ominous. There were also a lot of instances in the trailer that the audience could relate to. We all know that one person on Facebook who thinks that quoting award winning movies will make them seem more interesting. I think that it is very true that most award winning movies follow the same “trailer formula”. Just like most successful novels follow the classical paradigm model, if a filmmaker is looking to have a successful movie, they will probably stick to what they know works. In most of the films I watch, I see the basic complication, rising action, climax, and denouement put into place, but my favorite “film formulas” to watch are the hero’s journeys. If I had to pick between seeing a film that is sticking to the old patterns and one that is stretching the boundaries I would want to see one that is taking a risk and moving away from the traditional outlines. It is very hard for those types of movies to turn out well and be successful but I think it would be refreshing to see.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear your thoughts on the ways the trailer is wrong! No one has ever made this comment before.
DeleteThe Trailer For Every Oscar-winning Movie Ever was very dramatic and displayed many different plots of award winning films. However, I did not find it funny, because it was very drawn out. I agree that most Oscar winning films follow the same story pattern, but this is what the audience wants to see. A story full of great success without any failures is boring. Every story does not follow the same plot, but there is always a protagonist, an antagonist, a conflict, climax, and conclusion. Each film is designed this way because a story would be too long if there were more characters and different plot twists. Movies tend to be around an hour and half or two hours long. If the movie had anymore story it would be too long and make the budget for the movie even bigger. Money rules the movie industry, and the only reason that movies are made by this "formula" is because of the success that it has brought.
ReplyDeleteSome movies do follow the same old pattern, however they use symbolism throughout the movie that people do not realize or pick up on. Some viewers just scratch the surface of films and only see what is put in front of their faces, and not the underlying meaning of the film.
Why do you think many viewers miss the underlying meaning?
DeleteI did like the trailer! it reminded me of a Da Vinci's Notebook song, Title of the Song. I agree that it includes a lot of stereotypical themes of trailers that come out. The "story" of the movie also seems plausible because that is exactly what film critics want in a heartfelt drama. I thought the trailer was extremely funny and I would not be opposed to sending it to a couple friends on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the most identifiable stereotype used was in the beginning. The protagonist declares himself and states that his life is great and nothing could bring him down. The plot then develops when another character is thrown into the mix. That is pretty much the plot of any dramatic story. Another part that is true for possibly all of the award winning trailers is the ending. The character plainly says the moral of the story and then the movie title. I feel like that is not just award winning trailers, but almost all trailers.
I won't say that films that follow this formula are boring or the same because it is not true. However, there is truth in comedy, and that is why this trailer is funny. People like the stereotypical story. Most people don't even realize that the stories are so similar. It happens all the time. Super 8 is E.T. The Lion King is Hamlet. Olympus Has Fallen is Die Hard. The unoriginal ideas are not necessarily bad. They just contain similar themes and are recreated in different ways, to please a changing audience.

Whenever I first watched the trailer for "Not Another Award-Winning Movie" I was a bit bewildered. The way that the characters spoke threw me off at the beginning until I actually realized what was going on. I did not like the trailer for the reason that it was spoken completely in phrases substituted for actual scripted lines because I would find that irritating to watch an entire movie in dialogue like that. I did, in fact think that this trailer was humorous because of the way that the characters substituted phrases to describe what they wanted to say instead of using dialogue. I would not say that it was a complete waste of my time because it made me laugh. Although I thought the trailer was comical, I would not share it with my Facebook friends because most of my Facebook friends do not think parodies are funny.
ReplyDeleteI think that this trailer basically "hit the nail on the head" in what I believe about the film industry. They follow a basic flow and use the same types of phrases as other blockbusters. This trailer does satire other award-winning films very well with its commonly uses phrases. For example, when the protagonist says "Relief at having found meaning in my life.", this is a satire to many romantic movies, but the one that sticks out in my mind is "The Lucky One" by Nicholas Sparks. Once the main character finds the woman in the picture it is like his life is complete.
The types of formulas that I tend to see are the ones from horror films. Almost all of them follow the same pattern. For instance, in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", the group of teens go into the woods, find an abandoned cabin, and their curiosity gets them murdered by a lunatic. Not all scary films have this pattern but the fair share of them do. The romantic tragedies that I watch do follow the formulas outlined in this trailer.
I prefer to watch the types of movies that tend to stretch the boundaries of the normal films in their genre. There is nothing that I hate more than to watch the first ten minutes of a movie and predict the remaining events. I think that a little change in the film industry does good. Lately it seems as if movies outside of the normal trends have gone extinct. I try to dig deeper into the realm of films to find those unusual movies that are actually amazing, but nobody will give them a chance because they do not contain big hit actors and actresses.
